Descendants of Elizabeth Schwalm
John Klinger is also referred to as Johannes Klinger in some sources.1 He was born on 10 February 1822.2,1 He was the son of Alexander Klinger and Elizabeth Schwalm. John Klinger was baptized on 10 March 1822, Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA. The sponsors for the baptism were John's grandparents, Johannes and Ottilia Schwalm.1 There is some uncertainty about the identification of this John Klinger. The Gratz Historical Society's book "History of Lykens Township" offers conflicting listings for John.
Some sources list him as "John Henry Klinger" and identify his wife as Elizabeth and father of a child named John Alexander, born in 1850, who in turn was the father of Joseph LeRoy Clinger (1884-1950), who was born and died in Wisconsin. It is unclear on what evidence this is based, and it seems unlikely, given that in 1850, a John Klinger (married to Sarah) born about 1822, a tailor, who baptized 3 children at Klinger's Church, was living close to his siblings, Emma Reed, Samuel and David Klinger, in Lykens Township.3,4,5 He married Sarah Buffington, daughter of John E. Buffington and Susannah (?).6 Mary Klinger says that John, along with his brother David, inherited "the farm to west of the homestead, later to be Henry Klinger's (a cousin). David sold his share to his future father-in-law, John Wiest, and so John, who had married Sarah Buffington, was forced to sell his share." This may not be entirely accurate.
By deed dated March 9, 1837, Alexander and Elizabeth (Schwalm) Klinger conveyed 89 acres, 62 perches of their land to Emi (Klinger) Reed, Samuel Klinger, David Klinger, and John Klinger, as tenants in common. This land, in both Schuylkill County and Dauphin County, likely included at least part of Johann Philip Klinger's original homestead. Samuel was then unmarried, and John Klinger and John Reed were millwrights.
On April 12, 1849, David and John Klinger, by deed of partition, conveyed 47 acres, 2 perches of that land to Emi Reed and Samuel Klinger.7,8 In 1850, a John Klinger, born c. 1822, and wife Sarah Klinger (age 24) were living in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA, in the household listed after John and Ami Reed and close to that of Samuel and Balinda Klinger. John was listed as a tailor, and their household consisted of three children, Elizabeth (age 5), Alfred (age 3) and Serverus [Serenus?] (age 1 month). The children closely correspond to children baptized by John and Sarah Klinger at Klinger's Church.9 It is unclear what happened to John and Sarah after 1850. They have not been located positively in any later census or church record. A John Klinger, born 1821, died 18 Sep 1893, is buried in Sunbury Cemetery, Northumberland County, PA. It is unclear who this person is.10
