    Verna Joan Kessler, age 73, formerly of Spring Glen, passed away Friday, November 1, 2013 at The Manor at Susquehanna Village, Millersburg after a long exhausting fight with multiple sclerosis. She was born on Wednesday, April 10, 1940, in Upper Mahantongo Twp, a daughter of the late Cloyd D Mattern, Sr and Verna M Snyder Mattern. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Sacramento. Her husband Leonard I Kessler passed away in 2005. She was also preceded in death by two brothers Cloyd Mattern, Jr and Ray Mattern; and a sister Esther Schwartz. She is survived by two daughters Beverly A Hockenberry and her husband Jim of Shermansdale and Holly J Jury and her husband Chris of Elizabethville; a granddaughter Cortney Koppenhaver of Spring Glen; a grandson Colby Jury of Elizabethville; six great grandchildren; and two sisters Ruby Smith and Lena Schwartz. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Sacramento, on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Raymond Holland officiating. A viewing was held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Thursday at the church. Burial was made in St. Paul's Cemetery, Sacramento. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, was in charge of arrangements.     She was born Aug. 12, 1926, in Mahantango Township, a daughter of the late Cloyd Sr. and Verna (Snyder) Mattern. On Oct. 3, 1942, in Leck Kill, she married Holden S. Smith who preceded her in death on March 20, 1994.
    Ruby was a homemaker.
    She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Red Cross, a former member of the Idella Rebekah Lodge 58 Dornsife.
    Ruby enjoyed knitting, embroidering, cooking and baking.
    She is survived by one son and two daughters-in-law, Terry and Audrey Smith, of Herndon, and Amye Smith, of Northumberland; four grandchildren and their spouses, Traci and Rahn Troutman, Kirk and Amy Smith, Brian and Annie Smith, and Melonie and Dave Bushaw; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lena Schwartz, of Gratz.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Carmen Smith; two brothers and two sisters.
    A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Robert G. Foust Jr. Funeral Home, 841 W. Shamokin Trevorton, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Glen B. Keidel Jr. and the Rev. Jimmie Schwartz, officiating.
    Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ruby's memory to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Mrs. Mae Lesher, Treasurer, 1242 Creek Road, Dornsife, PA 17823.
