ZERBE GIRL, 16, DROWNS IN LAKE
Ennetta Mae Wiest Meets Death In Tragic Climax To Family Outing.
Ennetta Mae Wiest, 16, of 1021 Mahanoy street, Trevorton, lost her life Sunday evening when she drowned in eight feet of water in Saylor's Lake in the Pocono Mountain area.
The tragedy occurred at a family outing which began early on Sunday. Efforts to revive the girl failed, although two lifeguards pulled her body from the water within 15 minutes after she disappeared. Miss Wiest, accompanied by her sister, Miss Bernitta Wiest and a friend, Bernetta Burkheiser, had| waded into about three feet of water along the lake's shore and were preparing to swim. It is believed that Ennetta fell from an underwater ledge into deep pool. She appeared on the surface once and then disappeared. The two girls summoned lifeguards who began an immediate search and within 15 minutes had recovered the body.
Miss Wiest, accompanied b by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nevin Wiest and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wolz, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Walz, Jr., Paxinos R. D. 1 and Bernitta went to Lake Minola, near Broadsville, Sunday morning and' following a picnic dinner and supper she accompanied mer, and Mrs. John Burkheiser, of Saylorsville, to Saylor's Lake. Her parents came to the lake later.
Three doctors and a crew of men worked for two hours to revive the girl, but at 8 p. m. she was pronounced dead. At one time one of the doctors reported a faint heart and pulse beat, but hopes diminished when efforts proved in vain.
Doctors said there were marks on the girl's body indicating she may have been injured when she fell into the deep pool, but cause of death was listed as drowning.
Ennetta Mae Wiest was born in Trevorton November 14, 1937, the daughter of Nevin and Loretta Koch Wiest. She was affiliated with Zion Lutheran Church, of Trevorton and would have been a junior in the Trevorton School at the opening of the term. She was a member of the Trevorton 4-H Club.
