"I plan to make the Army my Career" stated Master Sergeant Gilbert Henry Mitchell, Jr., this week, as he paused from his duties with the famed U. S. Army band located at Fort Myers, Va.
Sgt. Mitchell recently received a promotion from sergeant first class to master sergeant. Not long ago he reenlisted in the U. S. Army for another hitch.
An expert rifleman with the M1 rifle, he completed basic training at Camp Lee, Va. He is currently assigned with the band.
Prior to enlisting in the Army, he was a member of the Radio City Music Hall Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Symphony Orchestra and the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. He attended E. Williams Music School after graduating from Lykens High School.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Henry Mitchell, a local restauranteur in Lykens.

He will be forever remembered for his love of the Lord, impeccable musical artistry, leadership and teaching acumen.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Joyce S. Mitchell.
He is survived by a sister, Marilyn Reedinger of Lykens, PA; daughters, Lisa Galoci of Manassas, VA and Megan Kabatt of Exton, PA; and six grandchildren.

He married Patricia In 1968 and they enjoyed travel, family gatherings, and attending grandklds' sports and performances. He was a past president of Klwanls, and of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered for the Auburn and University Place Food Banks as well as worked at the Puyallup Fair for 12 years.
Jack and Pat bowled every week, but his favorite was Softball. He played every season for nearly 50 years. Pat was his biggest fan.
He Is greatly missed by his sister Atria Scott, brother Ray and Kathy Miller, Connie Miller, Wendy and Dirk Post Lynn and Bill Gibson, David and Tonl Schartow, John Miller, 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded In death by his daughter Terrl Cheney.

He was retired from Alfa Laval Thermal Co., Lykens.
He was associated with Lykens United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 124, Lykens, for 50 years; Liberty Hose Company No. 2, Lykens; Dauphin County Volunteer Firemen's Association; and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Roy.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, the former Dorothy M. Warfield; a son, John R. Sr., Lykens; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens. The Rev. Keith J. Schmuck will officiate. Interment, with military honors will be in Calvary United Methodist Cemetery, Wiconisco.4

Services for Walter J. Umholtz, 71, of RD1 Hegins, who died Christmas morning at Northeast Baptist Hospital, San Antonio, Tex., will be held Friday morning from Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View. The Rev. Guy Grube of Valley View will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Donald Wetzel of Hegins. Interment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery at Valley View.
Mr. Umholtz was visiting a daughter when he was stricken ill. He was born Feb. 13, 1907 at Good Spring, a son of the late Reily and Emma Miller Umholtz. Before retiring, he was employed at Klinger and Stehr Tire Shop, Valley View. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, served two terms on the church council, was on the worship and music committee and was a member of the stewardship committee.
Surviving are his widow, the former Minerva Koppenhaver; three children, Georgene, wife of Carl Scheib, San Antonio, Tex; Walter of San Jose, Calif; Diann, wife of Paul Geist, Hegins; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; also surviving, Mrs. Jean Bair, Hegins.
The Robert Miller Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.
