    Fertig Interment Thursday.
    The intennent of the remains of Freemout Fertig will be made from his late home in Helfenstein Thursday morning. The cortege will leave the house at 10 a. m. and interment will be made in Deep Creek cemetery.
    Mr. Fertig had suffered for a long time with liver trouble but it was noly [sic] Sunday morning that he was compelled to take to his bed and it was then found that the stomach had been affected. Yesterday morning hemorhages of the stomach set in and he expired about noon.
    He was a member of the Sons of Veterans and the Elks, of town, the P. O. S. of A. and the Odd Fellows, of Pitman, and the Knights of Pythias of Locust Dale.
    Deceased was 37 years of age and is survived by a wife and four children.

    Mrs. Mary Fertig, Mother Of Town Resident, Dies
    Mrs. Mary Fertig, 76, mother of Frank Fertig, of Third and Hanover streets, died Wednesday at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Harry C. Welker, of Lavelle, Pa., with whom she resided. She had been bedfast the past three months.
    Mrs. Fertig was the widow of Fremont Fertig. She was born on October 10, 1869, in Rebuck, a daughter of the late Jonathan and Sarah Kehres Keiffer. She was a member of the Reformed Church at Helfenstein.
    Her husband died in 1901 and to survive are these children; Fred W., Helfenstein; Frank W., Northumberland; Mrs. Harry Welker, Lavelle, and Mrs. Carrie E. Paul, Lavelle. Thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive as do these brothers and sisters: Daniel Keiffer, Rebuck; Samuel Keiffer, Dornsife, and Mrs. Jane Schlegel. of Ashland.
    Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Kull funeral home, Asn land. Services will be in charge of Rev. Melvin Walper, pastor of Zion's Reformed Church and interment will be in Kimmel's cemetery.

  • In 1917, when he registered for the draft in World War I, Fred was living in Philadelphia and working as a stenographer for Henry & West, on Chestnut Street.2
  • From November 1, 1917 through June 3, 1919, Fred served with the Headquarters Company, 310th Field Artillery Unit which saw action in France.4
  • Frederick Wallace Fertig married Rosemary Schwan, daughter of Herman Schwan and Ada (?), on 31 July 1922.5,6
  • In 1930, Fred and Rosemary were living in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, PA, where he worked in a general store. Rosemary was a streamstress working at home.7

    Born Dec. 31, 1927, in Mount Carmel, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter K. and Marie Edwards Fertig.
    He was a 1945 graduate of Mount Carmel High School; and a 1951 graduate of Penn State College with a degree in forestry.
    He served in the U.S. Army.
    He was employed by the Army Map Service from 1951 to 1957. He was later employed by the Central Intelligence Agency from 1957 until his retirement in 1980.
    He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waynesboro.
    He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 731, Waynesboro; and American Legion Post 0091 in Mount Carmel. He was an Eagle Scout.
    He is survived by his wife, Phyllis L. Lerch Fertig, whom he married May 17, 1952; one son, Wynn K. Fertig of Fairfax, Va; one sister, Margaret Ann Downing of Springfield, Va; and nieces and nephews.
    Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
    Memorial donations may be made to Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268; or Mount Carmel Library, South Oak St., Mount Carmel, Pa. 17851.4

    Palmer C. Haas, 89, of the Pitman area, died at 9 p.m. Saturday in Ashland Hospital, where he was admitted earlier in the day. He was in ill health for six months.
    Mr. Haas was born in the Pitman area, Aug. 20, 1891, a son of the late Lewis and Agnes Wetzel Haas.
    Mr. Haas was a retired farmer and milk truck driver. He drove for more than 45 years for Maurer's Wayside Dairy, Mount Carmel. He had also been employed as a custodian at Mahan-tongo Valley Elementary School of Tri-Valley School District.
    He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Klingerstown.
    His wife, the former Mayme Dietz, died Nov. 16, 1968.
    Surviving are two daughters, Fern, Wife of Homer Klinger, Mount Carmel, and May, wife of Chester Snyder, Lemoyne; a son, Kermit, Swanton, Ohio; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren.
    Services will be held Wednesday afternoon from Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, RD1 Klingerstown. Interment will be in Salem Cemetery, Klingerstown. The Rev. Elden Ehrhart will officiate.
