  • Newspaper obituary:
Alice Gray of West Chester Alice Gray passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 at Barclay Friends in West Chester, where she had stayed since 1996. Born in Cambridge, Mass., Ms. Gray was the daughter of Jerome B. Gray, a noted advertising copywriter and founder of the Philadelphia firm Gray & Rogers, and Miriam A. Fertig Gray, a former nurse. Alice grew up in The Dower House on North High Street in West Chester, purportedly the oldest home in town, restored by the noted novelist Joseph Hergesheimer. She lived at that address most of her life. Alice showed early athletic talent and was active in sports attending Wilmington Friends School in Del. and Wellesley College in Mass. Her father, an active golfer and one-time president of Merion Golf Club, encouraged her to try golfing. His suggestion paid off as she won many golfing honors, including the Dorothy Campbell Howe Cup at Merion in 1964. Her amateur career culminated with two Pennsylvania State Women's Amateur golf championships in 1961 and 1963. With little monetary gain possible for women golf professionals in the sixties, Alice become a ladies pro and instructor first at West Chester Golf & Country Club and later at Edgmont Country Club in Newtown Square. Her low-pressure advice and good humor gained her hundreds of students, both male and female. "One thing that I think is important," she said, "is to make golf a pleasure right from the beginning." She was a member of both West Chester Golf & Country Club and Merion Golf Club. She was Club Champion player at both. Her non-sport interests included gardening and watercolor painting. Alice is survived by her brother-in-law Philip Jamison, nieces and a nephew. Her sister, Jane Gray Jamison died in 2008. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7th, at Oakland Cemetery, West Chester. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to donate to Barclay Friends, 700 N. Franklin St., West Chester, PA 19380.
