Elmer Michael Klinger1

  • Last Edited: 30 Jul 2019
  • Elmer Michael Klinger is also referred to as Michael E. Klinger in some sources.2
  • He was born on 19 September 1874, Northumberland County, PA.3
  • Some sources record that Elmer Michael Klinger was born Different sources list Elmer's birth date variously, ranging between 1874 and 1878. The Zion (Klinger's) Church burial records suggest a birth date of 30 September 1874, while the cemetery listings give a date of 1876. The Census records give a range of birth dates from about 1876 through September 1878. Still other sources give a birth date of 9 September 1876. circa 1877, Pennsylvania.2,1,4,5,6,7
  • He was the son of Jonas Klinger and Maria Wolfe.2
  • Several sources identify an "Elmer" Klinger, born circa 1876, as a son of Jonas and Maria (Wolf) Klinger. The 1880 Census for Lykens Township, Dauphin County, lists Jonas and Maria's children as "Michael E." Klinger (born c. 1877) and Clara A. Klinger (born c. 1879). While there appear to be no further records of "Michael E." Klinger, an "Elmer" or "Elmer M." Klinger, born Sep. 1878, appears in subsequent Census listings for Lykens Township. The Census listings for Jonas and Maria consistently indicate that they had only 2 children, and only one of them survived past 1900. These facts suggest that Michael E. Klinger, identified in the 1880 Census, is the person later listed as Elmer Klinger.7,5,4,1
  • Elmer Michael Klinger married Mary Catherine Engle, daughter of Isaac Engle and Isabelle Russell, circa 1894. Some sources give Catherine's maiden name as "Engle."8,7
  • At the time of the 1900 Census, Elmer and Catherine were living in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA, where Elmer was a carpenter. They had been married 5 years and had 2 children.9
  • The 1910 Census lists Elmer as an "engineer" in a lumbermill. He and Catherine's household included 5 children: Charles, Luther, Stanley, Jennie, and Verna.5
  • In 1920, Elmer was a grain thresher in Lykens Township. His household included his wife Catherine and 4 of their children: Charles, Luther, Stanley, and Roy.4
  • In 1930, Elmer was working as a lumberman in a sawmill. He and Catherine's household included only their youngest son Roy.1
  • Elmer Michael Klinger died on 30 September 1954, Erdman, Dauphin County, PA.6,3
  • He was buried on 5 October 1954, at Zion (Klinger's) Church Cemetery, Erdman, Dauphin County, PA.6,3
  • Newspaper obituary:
    ELMER KLINGER
Elmer Klinger, age 80 years, died at his home at Erdman Thursday evening.
A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Klinger, he was a native of Northumberland County. He was a member of Klinger's Reformed Church, Erdman. His wife, Mrs. Catherine Engle Klinger, died last November.
