  • Benjamin B. Leitzel and David B. Leitzel were twin brothers. The year of their births is in dispute: the burial records of Davids Church, Hebe, lists David as having been born in 1939; while those of Klinger's Church, Lykens Twp., lists Benjamin as having been born in 1840. -- BTH.1
  • DAVID B. LEITZEL, son of BENJAMIN and ELIZABETH (BYERLY) LEITZEL, was one of a pair of twin sons, born in Jordan Township, near the current site of Klingerstown, Northumberland County, PA, on February 26, 1839.

He was a farmer and a proficient blacksmith.

Sometime around 1860, David married MARIA ANNA "Mary" TROUTMAN (born February 15, 1842), daughter of GEORGE and JUSTINA (CLARK) TROUTMAN. David and Mary had nine children: WILLIAM T. (born April 1, 1861, died 1944), FRANKLIN (born October 1, 1862, died July 19, 1888), EMMA E. (born 1864, died 1954), OSCAR (born November 24, 1865, died 1948), DAVID (born August 28, 1867, died September 24, 1867), ADAM T. (born 1869, died 1947), MARY JANE (born 1871, died 1945), JAMES (dates of birth and death unknown), and JESTYA (born June 1, 1879, died March 22, 1909). -- Source: Floyd-918-919.

David B. Leitzel was born and reared in Jordan Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. From his early childhood until he reached the age of 24, he worked on his father's farm; and although he never learned the trade, he became a proficient blacksmith, working in a blacksmith's shop during one winter. He also spent a year as a drover, buying and selling cattle, this job taking him as far as Berks County. After the Civil War, he returned to the parental farm -- where he had worked for a number of years before the war -- until he bought a farm of 70 acres near Klingerstown. In 1904, he relocated to a 47-acre tract of land located a quarter of a mile west of Hebe. He did well in his agricultural efforts, to which he devoted practically his entire life.

"DAVID B. LEITZEL, son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Byerly) Leitzel, was born in Jordan township Feb. 26, 1839. He was reared there, becoming accustomed to farm work from boyhood, and though he never learned the trade also became a proficient blacksmith, and was employed in a blacksmith's shop one winter. He worked for his parents until he was twenty-four years old, and then spent a year in cattle droving, buying and selling cattle, this business taking him as far as Berks county. Before the Civil war period he had been farming on the paternal place, and he was, there for some years afterward, until he bought a farm of seventy-seven acres near Klingerstown. After cultivating that place for seven years he sold it, and afterward lived there again for a time. In 1904 he came to his present home, which is a quarter of a mile west of Hebe, the tract containing forty-four acres. Mr. Leitzel has owned several farms at different times, and he has done well in his agricultural work, to which he has devoted practically all of his time. He has been a useful citizen, and his executive ability has received substantial recognition from his fellow citizens, who have chosen him to serve as township treasurer, supervisor and overseer of the poor. Politically he is a Democrat.
"Mr. Leitzel married Mary Troutman, daughter of George and Jestina (Clark) Troutman, who lived in Jordan township. They have had a family of eight children: William, of Uniontown, Pa., at present engaged as stage driver; Frank, deceased; Emma, wife of David Strohecker; Oscar, of Jordan township; Adam, of Jordan township; Jane, who married Elsworth Shaffer and lives at Shamokin; James, of Jordan township; and Jestina, who married Oscar Bohner, and died in 1908.
