    William H. Smeltz, 64, of Hegins R. D. 1, brother of Mrs. Joseph Hartman of Pine Grove, died suddenly of a heart ailment on Saturday near his home.
    A native of Gratz, Mr. Smeltz was a son of the late Monroe and Katherine Ritzman Smeltz.
    He had been employed as a mechanic at the Olmstead Air Force Base at Middlctown and was recent ly honored for 20 years of service.
    He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran and Reformed Church (Coleman's) Hubley Twp., a member of World War I of United States of America, Inc. at Middletown, the Klingerstown Fire Company, Valley View Fire Co., and the County Voiture of Forty and Eight. He served as adjutant for the Valley View Post of American Legion for 25 years.
    Surviving are: his wife, the former Nora Klinger; three sons; Robert of Elizabethtown, Samuel of Valley View, and Parvin of Hegins R. D. 1; a daughter Brenda, at home; 11 grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Joseph Hartman of Pine Grove; four brothers: Allen of Spring Glen; Frank of Elizabeth ville; Thomas and Lewis, both of Klingerstown R. D.
    His funeral was held this afternoon from the Miller Funeral Home in Valley View. The Rev Joseph Heiney of Lykens officiated at the services and interment was made in Union Cemetery, Sacramento.

    Born in Hegins, he was a son of the late William H. and Nora Klinger Smeltz.     Elva was a homemaker, seamstress, domestic worker, musician, and deaconess. She was a member at Zeltenreich's United Church of Christ where she formerly was a member of the Consistory, served as Sunday School Teacher, sang in the choir, served on the Mission Committee, was a member of the Lancaster Federation of Bible Classes, and played Mandolin in the Melody Strings. She also enjoyed crocheting and music.
    Surviving are two sons, Henry, married to Sharon Smeltz of New Holland, and David, married to Paula Smeltz of Prospect Hill, NC; three daughters, Marilyn, married to Hal Beasley of Manheim, Sharon, married to Glenn Longenecker of Elizabethtown, and Sheila Smeltz of New Holland; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a brother, Mark R. Scheib of England; and four sisters, Edna P. Reed of New Holland, Mary E. Shomper of Palmyra, Hilda M. Dietrich of Winchester, VA, and Verna M. Harner of Palmyra. Preceding her in death is a son, Byron Robert Smeltz; and a sister, Mable I. Kantz.
    Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Zeltenreich's United Church of Christ, 752 Hollander Road, New Holland, PA 17557 with the Reverend Christopher Smeltz officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. There will be no viewing but the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall with refreshments following the interment.     Dr. LeRoy C. Smeltz, 85, of 1108 W. Mountain Road, Hegins, passed away Sunday at his residence.
    He was born Nov. 5, 1927, on the family farm near Sacramento, a son of the late William Roy and Verna Wagner Smeltz.
    He graduated from the former Hubley Township High School in 1945. He received his bachelor's degree in agricultural education in June 1951 from Penn State University. In August 1957, he received his master's degree in agricultural education from Penn State, and in December 1969 he received his doctorate degree in education from Penn State.
    LeRoy taught vocational agriculture at Millersburg High School for one year. In September 1952, he began teaching vocational agriculture at Tri-Valley High School, where he remained until his retirement in March 1984.
    He served the Tri-Valley Education Association in various capacities including president and chief negotiator. He served as secretary for the Schuylkill County PSEA Coordinating Council; chairman of the Retirement Committee for PSEA Eastern Region; chairman and VPAE representative on the PSEA Resolutions Committee. He was one of the "founding fathers" of the Schuylkill County PSEA-Retired and served as the first director.
    LeRoy was very active in organizations relating to his chosen field. He served as executive secretary of the Pennsylvania Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association for five years and president of the Tri-Valley Community Fair Association for 32 years. He was Region 7 vice president as well as secretary-treasurer elect and president of the Pennsylvania Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. He was a member of the Schuylkill-Carbon County Pennsylvania Farmers Association and served as delegate to the American Vocational Association and National Vocational Agriculture Teacher Association Conventions. He was awarded the Honorary Keystone FFA Degree and Honorary American FFA Degree. He was an honorary life member in PVATA and NVATA. He also received the National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association Outstanding Service Award.
    One of his many outstanding achievements was initiating and organizing the Tri-Valley Environmental Education Center which included locating boundary lines and building bridges and trails. He was very proud of the educational value of this project and that it is now recognized as a Schuylkill County Tree Farm by the Forest Service.
    He was a member and past president of the Hegins-Valley View Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and served as chairman of the scholarship committee. He served as a member of the Hegins Area Ambulance Association Board of Directors and was also a member of several local fire companies.
    LeRoy was a member of F&AM Valley Lodge 797, Valley View, Tremont Royal Arch, the Harrisburg Consistory, and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest 125, Millersburg.
    He was a member of Zion Lutheran "Klinger's" Church, Erdman, where he served as council president and secretary. He contributed much time and talent to the building and property committee. He also taught Sunday School and was president of the Cemetery Board of Directors for many years.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae E. Smeltz, in 1981; his second wife, Dorothy Jean Brosius Adams Smeltz, in 2008: and a brother, Lester D. Smeltz.
    He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Dietrich and her husband, Lynn, Chambersburg, and Nancy Hallowell and her husband, Jim, Ottsville; two stepsons, Forrest Adams and his wife, Linda, Mechanicsburg, and Barry Adams and his wife, Mary Jane, Fredericksburg, Va; two stepdaughters, Rebecca Dietrich and her husband, Daniel, Pitman, and Lori Heim and her husband, Larry, Pitman; an aunt, Ruth Fetter, Leck Kill; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews.
    Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran "Klinger's" Church, Erdman, with the Rev. Jonathon Jenkins and the Rev. Raymond Holland officiating. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Interment will be made in Zion Lutheran "Klinger's" Cemetery, Erdman. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dr. LeRoy C. Smeltz Educational Memorial Fund, c/o Gratz National Bank, P.O. Box 816, Valley View, PA 17983. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.

    Marie E. Koppenhaver, 98, of Gratz, passed away on February 2, 2022, at the Penn State Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. She was born in Gratz on February 8, 1923, a daughter of the late Nettie and George Klinger.
    She was a member of Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz, and Goal Mates. Marie was the church organist, Sunday School teacher, member of the Willing Workers and sang in the choir. Marie was the Superintendent of Needlework at the Gratz Fair. She enjoyed crafting, ceramics, needle work, flowers and bird watching.
    Marie is survived by her two sons, Gary (Carol) Koppenhaver, Bruce (Linda) Koppenhaver; daughter, Jane Shade; brother, Glenn (Gloria) Klinger; grandchildren, Stacy, Nicole, Tara and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Eli. She was preceded in death by husband, Gilbert Koppenhaver, and brother, Russell Klinger.
    A viewing will be held on February 8, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz. Interment will take place in the Gratz Union Cemetery, Gratz.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz.
    The family requests that you wear a mask if you are planning to attend the funeral services.7,8

    Born in Gratz, Feb. 28, 1920, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Verna Carl Koppenhaver.
    He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
    He was a retired foreman, having worked in the garment industry.
    He was a member of Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz, a former member of church council and a Sunday school teacher for many years; a member of the Gratz Fair Association, where he served in various offices; and a lifetime member of the Gratz Fire Company, where he received the Fireman of the Year Award in 1993.
    He served on the Gratz Borough Council for 34 years, was a former Upper Dauphin Area school board member and a former secretary of the Gratz Union Cemetery Association.
    Surviving are his wife, the former Marie Klinger; two sons, Gary, husband of Carol, Enola, and Bruce, husband of Linda, Gratz; a daughter, Jane, wife of Rodney Shade, Gratz; a sister, Ruth Lettich, Gratz; four grandchildren, Stacy, Nicole, Tara and Matthew; a great-grandchild.
    Religious services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Simeon United Lutheran Church. The Rev. Barry Ridge will officiate. Friends miay call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Gratz Union Cemetery, Gratz. James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, is in charge of arrangements.

    Mrs. Sarah T. Klinger, age 71 years, wife of Nathan Klinger, died at the home of her son, Allen Klinger, Millersburg, Saturday morning.
    Mrs. Klinger was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Miller and was a native of Gratz where she had resided many years.
    She is survived by her husband, one son, Allen Klinger, Millersburg; two step-sons, George F. Klinger of Gratz, and Edwin R. Klinger, Lykens R. D; one brother, Harry Miller, of Millersburg; a sister, Mrs. John Scheib, Valley View, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    Services were held from the Sterner Funeral Home, Millersburg, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. W. Z. Artz of Elizabethville, pastor of the Lykens Valley Lutheran Parish officiated and interment was made in the Gratz Cemetery.
