Catharine Klinger

F, #5224, b. 15 February 1815, d. 13 July 1847
  • Last Edited: 27 Jan 2023
  • Catharine Klinger was born on 15 February 1815, Lykens, Dauphin County, PA; The exact birth date is not clear. Mary Klinger lists the date of birth as "February 19, 1815," which is consistent with the Klinger's Church baptismal listings that she reprints in her book, on p. 456. On the other hand, the Meiser's listings of Howerter's Church cemetery give the date as "February 15."
The Klinger's Church History baptismal records list the baptism of a "Catharina" Klinger, born on February 15, 1815, but list her parents not as Philip and Catharina but as "Philip and w. Magdalena." The baptismal records reprinted in Mary Klinger's book list the parents as "Philip and wife Cath." in agreement with the Meiser's book. Both of the conflicting baptismal records give the sponsors as "Peter Klinger and [wife] Catharina."
The Gratz History lists the date of birth as January 25, 1828.1,2,3,4,5,6
  • She was the daughter of Johann Philip Klinger and Catharina (?)
  • Some sources record that Catharine Klinger was born on 19 February 1815.1
  • She married John Masser, son of Johannes Masser and Maria Margaretha Fick.
  • Catharine Klinger died on 13 July 1847, at age 32; Mary Klinger notes that Catharine married John or Johann Masser (Maaser), died at age 32 years, 4 months and 23 days, and was buried at Howerter's Church. Dr. Glenn Schwalm's published listings for that cemetery include the following entry for "Catharine Maaser": d/Philip & Catharine Klinger & w/ Johannes, b. 1815, d. 1847, 32.4.28." If Catharine was born on February, 15, 1815, this would mean she died on July 13, 1847.
With the birth date given by Mary Klinger, February 19, 1815, she would have died on July 17, 1847, using the age at death given by Glenn Schwalm. Mary Klinger, however, gives a slightly different age at death, 32 years, 4 months, and 23 days, which produces a death of death of July 12, 1847, with the February 19 birth date that she gives.4,7
  • Some sources record that Catharine Klinger died on 13 January 1847, but it is unclear whether this is correct.8,6
  • She was buried at Howerter's Church, now St. James Lutheran Church, Pitman, Schuylkill County, PA; Name lsited as "Catharine Maaser."4

  • John Masser is also referred to as Johannes Maaser in some sources.3,4,5
  • He was born circa 1806, Pennsylvania.6
  • He was the son of Johannes Masser and Maria Margaretha Fick.1
  • John Masser married Catharine Klinger, daughter of Johann Philip Klinger and Catharina (?).
  • John Masser married Elizabeth Troutman, daughter of Abraham Troutman and Elizabeth Regina Tschopp, after 1847.6

The children were: Elias (14); Cathrine (14); Eliza (12); Cathrine (12); John (10); Daniel (8); Maris [Moses] (7); Manarus [Manasses] (4); and David [4]. It is not clear which of these children were John's children and which were children of Elizabeth from her prior marriage. The Troutman Family History suggests that at least 2 of these children, Cathrine and Daniel were from Elizabeth's first marriage of John Leese, Jr., who died c 1842.6,7
  • In 1860, John and Elizabeth's household included 4 children, Mary (19); Moses (16); Manasses (13), and Atlanna (9).8

Dauphin County was not created until 1785; in 1745, it was part of Lancaster County, but if in fact the marriage occurred in Trinity Church. Lancaster, the listing for Upper Paxton Township would be incorrect.2,3
