Lillian Lavinia Schwenk1

  • Last Edited: 3 Dec 2024
  • Lillian Lavinia Schwenk is also referred to as Lillian Von Schwenk in some sources.2
  • She was born on 22 December 1890.1
  • She was the daughter of Milton K. Schwenk and Mary Emma (?)1
  • Some sources record that Lillian Lavinia Schwenk was born on 22 December 1895.3
  • She married George Wray Spurgeon, son of George Spurgeon and Eveline Smith, on 25 June 1912, Manhattan, New York County, NY.4,5
  • In 1922, Lillian and her daughter Catherine became the focus of national attention. As reported in a syndicated story, 5-year old Catherine inadvertently revealed to her mother's friend Helen Silber, wife of Carl F. Silber, that Catherine's "new Daddy" was in fact Helen's husband Carl. This resulted in 2 divorce actions. George Wray sued Lillian for divorce, and Helen similarly sued Karl. Both actions were heard together, as Lillian was named co-respondent in the Silber divorce and Carl was named co-respondent in the Spurgeon divorce. Both divorces were granted, and George Spurgeon was given custody of Catherine and her brother George Jr., known as "Buddy." The 1925 New York State Census confirms that fact, as George was head of a household that included Catherine, George Jr., and Mai Schwenk, widowed wife of Samuel K. Schwenk, Milton Schwenk's brother. The Census apprently incorrectly descibes her as George's "Mother-in-law."
The attention given the two divorcen actions resulted in a syndicated article that appeared in papers as far flung as the San Francisco Examiner. The article focused on the unwitting role of young Catherine. In the San Francisco Examiner the artile was headlined: "How 5-Year-Old Catherine "Spilled the Beans" for Mamma." The subhead was "Entertaining a Visitor in Her Mother's Absence the Child Pulls Out a Photograph of the Visitor's Own Husband and Says "He's My New Daddy"-- and Two Divorces Result."
Other stories ran in the New York Herald, the Philadelphia Inquirer. The divorces did not end the matter, as Helen Silber filed a civil suit against Lillian for damages. It is not known how that was resolved.6,7,8,9
  • Lillian Lavinia Schwenk and George Wray Spurgeon were divorced circa March 1923 Manhattan, New York County, NY.8,10,9
  • Lillian Lavinia Schwenk married Carl Frederick Silber after 1923.11
  • In 1930, Lillian and her second husband Carl F. Silber were living in Manhattan, NY.12
  • Lillian Lavinia Schwenk married William E. Downie after June 1931.13
  • After Carl Silber's death in 1931, Lillian apparent married William E. Downie, and in 1940 they were living in Manhattan.13
  • At the time of the 1950 Census, Lillian and William Downie were living on Wesst 115th Street in Manhattan in a household that included Lillian's married daughter Catherine S. Marquardt and her 6 year-old granddaughter Marie Marquardt.14
