  • He died on 29 October 2001.2
  • Newspaper obituary:
    James Shumate, former bank president
    BY LILA ARZUA larzua@herald.com
James Bernard Shumate, a former president of Southeast -First National Bank, died Oct. 29 of kidney failure. He was 72.
Born in North Wilkesboro, N.C., Bernie Shumate lived in a rustic home without indoor plumbing until age 14.
He finished high school at age 15 and began attending college at 16.
Shumate served in the Marines and Army Air Corps, stationed in Alabama and Kansas.
He attended Furman University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also had a passion for singing, and especially loved gospel music.
In 1952, Shumate married Mary Elizabeth Klinger, with whom he had a son and two daughters. They divorced in 1984.
In 1955, Shumate got his start in banking, working for Wachovia in Winston-Salem, N.C. Five years later, he moved to Miami to start the bond trading department of First National Bank, the first of its kind in South Florida.
He also continued his education and earned a master's in business administration from Harvard University. In 1970, Shumate became president of the First National Bank of Miami, then the lead bank of the Southeast Banking Corp. Shumate's leadership had a tremendous impact on the industry, said Bill Allen, who worked with Shumate for 20 years.
According to Allen, Shumate was an architect of branch banking in South Florida. From the mid-1960s to the early '70s, Shumate influenced legislation as well as changed public opinion to embrace a convenience many now take for granted, Allen said.
"He did business the old-fashioned way: He'd look you in the eye and say, 'I'll do it,' or 'I can't do it.' No banking gibberish," said Allen, now vice chairman of Northern Trust Corp.
Shumate was just as reliable when it came to fun. "He was like a magnet - people enjoyed being with him," Allen recalled.
Shumate was famous for sitting down at the piano and playing familiar songs by ear. He also loved to ride motorcycles and would often bring the family Yorkshire terrier for a spin around the country club on the bike. He often found time for favorite pastimes like golf, tennis and bridge.
He also served as chairman of the United Way of Dade County and president of the Florida Bankers Association.
In April 1984, Shumate married Jaine Speir. After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Shumate and his wife moved to North Carolina, and he retired in 1997.
"He was a lovable, happy, fun guy who lived life to t the fullest," said Jaine Shumate.
In addition to his wife, Shumate is survived by son James Bernard Shumate Jr; daughters Mary Beth Shumate and Sarah Jane Early; and two grandchildren. Services were held.
