WELL KNOWN MINING MAN EXPIRES AT WIEST HOME

John Simmendinger, Retired Mining Man, Succumbed at the Home of His Daughter

John Simmendinger, one of this community's most highly respected citizens and widely known retired mining man, died at 2:30 yesterday morning, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Wiest, 715 East Dewart Street, following a brief illness.
Mr. Simmendinger had suffered for many years with miner's asthma. On Tuesday of last week, he was seized with an attack of la grippe*, and the two diseases combined to break down his vitality, the patient gradually sinking until his death ensued. At his bedside when he passed away were his two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Wiest and Mrs. Raymond Hartlein, the latter of Philadelphia, who had been spending the holidays at the Wiest residence.
Mr. Simmendinger was born August 26, 1858, at Tremont, and therefore had passed his 72nd birthday last August. He was the son of the late John Simmendinger and Catherine (Miller) Simmendinger.
In the year 1880, Mr. Simmendinger came to this city where he was married on December 26 of that year to the former Miss Sarah Alice Houser, also of Tremont, and the young couple took up residence in this city. Excepting a brief period of residence in Mt. Carmel during the year 1884, they spent the remainder of their lives here. His wife preceded him in death on April 13, 1924.
At an early age, Mr. Simmendinger entered the occupation of mining coal, rising in that field until he was made an assistant mine foreman in 1902. He found employment in every colliery now operating in and around this city: Reading, Susquehanna, and independent, and several in Schuylkill County. About 30 years ago, he became fire boss at the Sterling Mine here and continued in that position until his retirement about nine years ago.
Mr. Simmendinger spent the larger part of his life in this city at his residence at 221 North Pearl Street, but three years ago he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. W. J. Wiest, at whose home he passed away.
The deceased was a man of exemplary character and sterling worth. He was possessed of a genial disposition and an honest Christian philosophy which endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. In addition to a large number of surviving relatives, he will be greatly mourned by a host of friends who will feel a distinct loss in reading the news of his death.
He is survived by the following children: Mrs. W. J. Wiest, wife of the member of the Shamokin school board; Charles Simmendinger, foreman of the Shamokin Dispatch; Russell A. Simmendinger; and Mrs. John A. (Helen) Snyder, all of this city; Mrs. Clara Hartlein, Marcus A. Simmendinger, and Miss Ruth Simmendinger, all of Philadelphia. The following grand children also survive: Attorney W. Irvine Wiest; Miss Sara L. Wiest, member of the faculty of the Shamokin High School; Misses Rose and Ruth Wiest; John Wiest, and Miss Anna Simmendinger, all of this city; Ray, Marcus, and Marion Hartlein, and Caroline and Marcus Simmendinger, all of Philadelphia. He is also survived by the following sisters: Mrs. Kathryn Hess, of this city; Mrs. Dena Imschweiler, Mrs. Mary Imschweiler. and Mrs. Margaret Reedy, all of Tremont.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon at the Wiest residence, 715 East Dewart Street, and will be conducted by Rev. W. E. Fischer, DD, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be made in the family plot in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery. -- Source: Obituary
