Norman Harry Rebuck1

  • Norman Harry Rebuck was born on 1 October 1949.1
  • He was the son of Charles Martin Rebuck and Beulah K. Smith.1
  • Norman Harry Rebuck died on 16 August 1978, Trevorton, Northumberland County, PA, at age 28; Newspaper article:
Area man suffocates in old well
    By Jim Merkel staff writer
TREVORTON - A 28-year-old Trevorton, father of two suffocated Wednesday as he was cleaning out an old well behind his home.
Norman Rebuck, 636 Shamokin St., died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The deadly gas came from a gasoline pump he was using in the well.
Northumberland County Deputy Coroner Quay Olley set the time of death as 4:30 p.m.
Rebuck's wife, Dorothy, was taken to Shamokin State General Hospital for treatment for hysteria. Benjamin Brubaker, a member of the Zerbe Township Board of Supervisors who attempted to rescue Rebuck from the well, was taken to the same hospital for observation after being overcome by fumes. He was released at about 10:45 p.m.
All were transported by Trevorton Fire Company ambulance.
Neighbors said Rebuck had told them he was doing the work to find an alternative to the water supplied by the Trevorton Water Co. He had said that his wife, a beautician, could no longer use the water provided by the company.
Rebuck, who had been a draftsman-instructor at the Northumberland County Area, Vocational-Technical School until was laid off, had been working in the approximately 55-foot deep well earlier in the afternoon, and had become sick from the fumes from the pump. He had obtained an electric pump about 3:20 p.m. and began using that. He apparently was overcome by fumes remaining in the well.
Rebuck, who had a 4-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son, went back down the well at about 3:45. At about 4:50, a neighbor who knew Rebuck was in the well summoned help.
There was about 3 1/2 feet of water and muck left in the well at the time of death, according to Zerbe Township Police Chief Dennis Derr. When Rebuck began cleaning the well, there was about 20 feet.
Brubaker volunteered to go down, but was quickly overcome. "It's too thick down here. Nobody can breathe down here. Pull me up," he was quoted as saying. Unconscious before he reached the surface, he was taken to the hospital.
Brubaker had been lowered into the well on a rope. He was pulled out by neighbors, including James Lebo and Jesse Miller, chairman of the Zerbe Township Board of Supervisors.
Derr said that he summoned Shamokin and Coal Township police to clear Rt. 225 to Shamokin so that the ambulance could pass.
A truck from the Shamokin Rescue Squad then came, and a member of the squad equipped with breathing apparatus was lowered into the well to pull Rebuck out.
Mrs. Rebuck became hysterical shortly after her husband's body was removed from the scene.
Derr said he believed she was in the house while Rebuck was working in the well.
The body was released to the Robert Foust Funeral Home, Trevorton.
Derr said Rebuck told a neighbor at about 3:30 that he was cleaning the well because he no longer wanted to use the water supplied by the Trevorton Water Co.
Residents have been complaining about dirty water and a recent rate increase. Rebuck had told the neighbors that it was important that his wife have clean water for her beauty shop.
Officials of the Roaring Creek Water Co., which supplies the water for the Trevorton Water Co., had said they had received no more complaints about dirty water, which had been partially caused by a recent break in a water line.
However, according to Jesse Miller, "Our water in here stinks." "Something has to be done" about the situation, he said.
Miller said Rebuck told him he was cleaning out the well, which had been out of service for at least 35 years, to get an alternative to the Trevorton Water Co.
One neighbor, who would not identify herself, asked: "Would this have happened if the water in Zerbe Township had not been dirty and the price had not gone up on it?"1,2,3
