  • Funeral home obituary:
We wanted to let you know that on June 11, 2015, Richard Lemon, 87, fell asleep and passed peacefully at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Columbia, Maryland. Richard is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Ruth Naomi; Connie Lemon of Catonsville, and Amber Vallotton and husband, Daniel, of Indian Valley, VA; grandson, Jeremiah Vallotton and wife, Katherine, of Harrisonburg, VA.
Richard was born to Marcus and Sara Lemon on February 28, 1928, in Abington, PA. Richard had one brother, Dean Lemon. He graduated from Herndon High School as valedictorian, then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a first class radar man. His tour included the Mediterranean Sea immediately after WWII. Richard then met Ruth Naomi and they married in 1951. Richard was a structural engineer for Green Associates, Century Engineering, Inc., and the Maryland State Highway Administration. Richard retired from his decades of service in 2011, thus having worked till the age of 84! Besides his professional career, Richard was very skilled at carpentry and wood working. He also enjoyed traveling, having visited many places in United States, Canada, and Europe. One of Richard's deep joys was spending time with his grandson, Jeremiah and his wife, Katherine.
Richard will be remembered for his tenacity, determination, drive, and "not give up" attitude--to not let any obstacle stand in the way of his goals. His example of hard work, dedication, and conscientiousness is a powerful example to us all, and we will always be inspired by his life.
A private family ceremony will be held at the Candle Light Funeral Home. If you would like, please make a comment or sign the guest book.

William Deppen

M, #1308, b. 20 November 1779, d. 3 September 1848
  • Last Edited: 26 Aug 2009
  • William Deppen was Hat maker.
  • He was born on 20 November 1779.
  • He was the son of John Deppen and Anna Barbara (?)
  • William Deppen married Magdeline Seiler.1
  • William Deppen died on 3 September 1848, at age 68.
  • He was buried at Stone Valley Church Cemetery, Hickory Corners, Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, PA.1
  • Floyd, Biographical and Genealogical Annals of Northumberland County (1911) [Internet version] gives somewhat inconsistent information about William Deppen. First, Floyd says: "William Deppen, son of John, was born in 1782 in Berks county. He married a Miss Maurer, and they were the parents of ten children, namely: Mrs. George Snyder (born in 1811), Abram, Isaac, David (died unmarried), Alexander, William, Mrs. Witmer, Mrs. Boyer, Mrs. Bower and John."
At another point, however, Floyd says: "William Deppen, one of the two grandsons of Christian mentioned as settling in Northumberland county, was a native of Berks county, born Nov. 20, 1779. He and his brother George settled near Herndon, in Jackson township, in 1810. He is buried at Stone Valley Church, in Lower Mahanoy township, where he died. He was a hat-maker by trade, but followed farming in Jackson township. His wife Magdelene (Seiler) bore him twelve children, namely: Abraham, Alexander, Isaac, John, David, William, Leah, Sallie, Caroline, Lydia, Mary and Elizabeth (who died in infancy). The father, William Deppen, who is buried at Stone Valley Church; died Sept. 3, 1848; his wife Magdelene, born Sept. 15, 1790, died Feb. 2, 1862. Their son David, born Aug. 29, 1824, died Feb. 21, 1850."
The two accounts differ in both the date of Birth, the name of the spouse, and in the list of children, although there appears to be substantial consistency in the names of the children. The "Mrs. George Snyder," referred to in the first passage is more commonly known as "Sarah," who is probably the "Sallie" referred to in the second passage.2
