Samuel Henry Klinger is also referred to as Samuel Henry Kniley in some sources.3 He was born on 6 July 1896, Dauphin County, PA.1 He was the son of Frederick Charles Kniley and Carrie Rebecca Klinger.2 Some sources record that Samuel Henry Klinger was born on 8 July 1896, Wiconisco, Dauphin County, PA.4,5 It is not clear who Samuel's biological parents were. A number of secondary sources list him as the son of Frederick Charles Kniley and Carrie Rebecca Klinger, but this is not clear. Frederick Kniley's obituary does not mention Samuel. It is possible that he was the son of Frederick Kniley and Carrie Rebecca Klinger.
At the time of the 1900 Census, Samuel's mother (step-mother ?) Carrie was listed as single and living in the home of her widowed mother Rebecca Klinger. Samuel was listed as Rebecca's grandson. Samuel was listed as "Samuel H. Kniley" in both the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, but after 1910 he is listed as Samuel Klinger. In 1920, Samuel is listed as Alvin Zimmerman's step-son, suggesting that he was the biological son of his wife Carrie Rebecca (Klinger) Zimmerman.
Carrie's obituary in the 8 Jun 1939 Harrisburg Telegraph described Samuel as her "step-son," suggesting that Samuel was not her biological son, but the listing for Samuel in the 1900 Census as the "grandson" of Rebecca Cooper Klinger suggests that he was Carrie's biological son.
In his 1925 application for a marriage license, Samuel listed his parents as "Carrie Klinger" maiden name "Knidy [Kniley?]" and "Henry Klinger."
On balance, there is no single explanation that fits all of the facts, although there is some probability that Samuel was Carrie's biological son.6,7,8,9,10,11 He married Catherine E. Campbell, daughter of Edward Campbell and Anna Robinson, on 26 December 1925, New Bloomfield, Perry County, PA.12,13 Samuel Henry Klinger died on 17 January 1972, Ickesburg RD, Perry County, PA, at age 75.1,14 He was buried on 20 January 1972, at Eschol Cemetery, Saville Township, Perry County, PA.14,15
