    Charles Miller
    Charles Miller, 44, of New York City, editor at large and former managing editor of Artforum magazine in New York City, died July 12 at Beth Israel Medical Center, Manhattan.
    Born in Pottsville in 1951, he was a son of Vincent Miller, Friedensburg, and Rhuba H. Thissen, Pine Grove. He lived in Greenwich Village and East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y.
    He received a bachelor's degree from Elizabethtown College in 1972, a master's degree from Middlebury College in 1973 and a doctorate in German studies from Indiana University in 1979. In the early 1980s, he taught German literature at Ohio State University and pursued post-doctoral work in Berlin, Germany.
    In 1983, he went into art criticism and was named editor of Dialogue, a nonprofit arts journal in Columbus, Ohio. He left there in 1986 to become managing editor of Artforum, a journal of contemporary art.
    He also published reviews and articles in Artforum, The New Art Examiner and Art Criticism, and taught art history at the School of Visual Arts. He became Artforum editor at large in 1992.
    Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Christine Miller Onderdonk, Saugerties, N.Y; his stepmother, Rene Miller, Friedensburg.
