  A 21-year-old Tampa man was near death at a local hospital early today after being struck down in what Tampa police say may have been a deliberate hit-and-run attack.
  Capt. Walter Pask said police were handling the investigation as a hit-and-run accident, but they are looking into the possibility that it was deliberate based on the statement of a witness that vehicle seemed to come right at the victim.
  David Bruce Bretz, 337 Court East, Riverview Terrace Apts., was struck from behind, Pask said, as he was walking north on Centnl Avenue in the curb lane.
  He was accompanied by a companion, Terry Baxley, 16, 311 Court East, Riverview Terrace. Bretz was dragged 190 feet by the speeding pickup truck, which continued north on Central Avenue before turning west on Broad Street, Police said.
  The accident occurred at 2:49 a.m. today at Central and Cluster Avenues. The pickup truck that struck Bretz was described as dark green, 1965 model.
  Police say a witness said the truck carried an "x" tag which would indicate it is a vehicle owned by a non-profit organization.
  A woman identifying herself as Charlene Miller, Bretz' sister, said Baxley had to knock on the doors . of three homes before he found anyone who would call for help.
  She said Baxley told her he spotted the headlights of the approaching vehicle and "tried to grab David (Bretz) out of the way."
  But his attempts to rescue Bretz failed. Bretz was in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital. His companion, Baxley, was not injured.
  Ms. Miller said she contacted The Times in the hope that "possibly someone would notice a dented truck or possibly the guy would feel guilty and turn himself in."

  Hit-and-run victim dies

  David Bretz, the 21-year-old victim of a hit-and-run accident last Saturday morning, died yesterday of the multiple injuries he received in the accident.
  According to an official at St. Joseph's Hospital, he died at 2:45 p.m. He had been in critical condition in the intensive care unit since entering the hospital.
  Bretz's sister, Charlene Miller, said doctors performed an electroencephalogram (EEG) yesterday and found that his brain had ceased functioning. His mother signed the papers, authorizing the disconnection of the machines that were maintaining his breathing and heartbeat, Mrs. Miller said.
  Bretz was struck from behind in the early morning hours Saturday as he and a friend walked in the curb lane of Central Avenue near Cluster Avenue, according to Tampa police.
  Mrs. Bretz told The Times that the companion, Terry Baxley attempted to pull Bretz out of the way. Baxley was not hurt.
  After the accident Saturday, Capt. Walter Pask confirmed that police were looking into the possibility that the hit and run was deliberate. Detectives working on the case could not be reached yesterday for comment on their progress.
  The vehicle that struck Bretz was described as a dark green 1965 pickup truck. Police were also checking the possibility that the truck had an "x" tag that would indicate it is a vehicle owned by a non-profit organization.
  Originally from Pennsylvania, Bretz had lived in Tampa for the past 10 years. He lived with his mother, Grace, at 337 Court East Riverview Terrace Apts.^2,3,4,1
