Rule Out Inquest In Highway Death
An inquest will not be necessary into the death of George H. Long, Shamokin R. D. 1, fatally injured Friday when he fell from a truck being driven by his son on the Hunter Station-Gowen City road.
Dr. Sidney Kallaway, Shamokin, Northumberland County Coroner, investigated along with Shamokin State Police. Dr. Kallaway released the body to the Wirt Funeral Service, Cliftmont, after Mr. Long had been pronounced dead of a skull fracture upon arrival at the Shamokin State Hospital.
According to the family, Mr. Long was sitting on the back of the flat-bodied truck, which was empty at the time, and upon nearing his home a few miles east of Hunter Station, arose and walked toward the rear of the truck. He lost his balance and fell to the black-top road. His daughter, Doris, was sittmg with him on the back of the truck, while a son George W., was driving the truck.
Mr. Long had been a resident of the Hunter Station area for 30 years. He was born at Bear Gap, May 3, 1886, a son of William N. and Mary Latsha Long. He retired as a miner in 1950, and recently was engaged in cutting timber from his land near Hunter Station.
Survivors include his wife, the former Emma Kerstetter, a native of West Cameron Township; five children, Mrs. Sarah DeHoutaint, of Trevorton; George W. Long, of Shamokin R. D. 1; Woodrow F. Long, Shamokin R. D. 1; Pvt. Darvin Long, with the U. S.Army in France, and Doris, at home. Six grandchildren also survive along with two elderly uncles, Franklin Long and John Engle, both of Gowen City. He was the last of his immediate family.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Blank Funeral Home, Shamokin street, Trevorton, with burial in the Lutheran and Reformed cemetery, Hunter Station. Rev. Charles Snyder, pastor of that church, will officiate. Friends may call at the Blank funeral home Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock and Sunday evening.
