    Gowen Wiest, age 60 years, 11 months and 7 days, died at his home in Lykens Township near Gratz at nine o'clock last Wednesday evening, January 17th. He had been employed in the mines for many years and had been in failing health the past two years due to a heart and lung affection.
    Mr. Wiest was a life long resident of the Gratz community. He was a son of George and Leah (Artz) Wiest and was born in Hubley Township, Schuylkill County, February 10, 1873. He was a member of Coleman's Lutheran Church and affiliated with Odd Fellows lodge of Gratz, and the United Mine Workers of America.
    Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Maggie Koppenhaver Wiest, and eight children, Mrs. John Clark, at home; Mrs. Walter Witmer, Lykens; Mrs. Albert Hesser, Mrs. Walter Heim, Shamokin; George D. Wiest, Berrysburg; James L. Wiest and Roy A. Wiest of Gratz and Arthur R. Wiest, at home.
    Services were held from the residence at ten o'clock Tuesday morning with further services in Coleman's Lutheran Church, where interment was made. The pastor, Rev. Dr. D. I. Sultzbach of Valley View, officiated.

    James L. Weist, 78, of Gratz, died Friday at Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg.
    Mr. Weist was born Jan. 28, 1897 in Shamokin, son of the late Gowan and Maggie Koppenhaver Weist.
    Surviving are his widow, the former Katie Hain; five sons and two daughters, Mrs. Paul Straub, Baltimore, Md; Warren, Tampa, Fla; Donald, RD Millersburg; Gerald, Gratz; Kenneth, Marysville; Mrs. Kenneth Fetterolf, Rebuck; Lynn, Hegins; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Witner, Millersburg; Mrs. Laura Hesser, Mrs. Mabel Heim, Shamokin.
    Services will be held Tuesday afternoon from the Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, with the Rev. Mark Weaver, pastor of the Evangelical Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be in Gratz Union Cemetery.
