They operated a grocery store, known as "Lutz" Wiest's store at that location for many years. After Luther died, Kathryn became too ill to live alone. Pauline Romaine Welker, 72, of 34 S. Second Street, Gratz, PA 17030, died Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at her residence.
She was born August 23, 1930 in Jordan Twp., Northumberland, PA, a daughter of the late Luther A. Wiest and E. Kathryn (Ramberger) Wiest. She was the widow of Walter "Wally" W. Welker, who died in 1996.
She was a graduate of the former Hegins Township High School. She was a member of Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz, PA. She was a Sunday School Teacher for many years at her church.
Surviving are 2 sons, Larry C. Welker, Gratz, PA, Jerry "Chirp" L. Welker, Spring Glen, PA; a brother, Park G. Wiest, West Virginia; a sister, Anna L. Oxenrider, R.D. Klingerstown, PA; and 2 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert W. Wiest.
Viewing will be on Saturday, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Simeon United Lutheran Church. Religious service will be held at Simeon United Lutheran Church, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with Rev. Barry Ridge, officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Gratz, PA.
