Lavina Walker was born on 5 February 1920, Samslee, MO.1 She was the daughter of William Clark Walker and Mary Florence Marshall.1 Lavina Walker married Otis Smith.1 Lavina Walker married Lee Darwin Schmeltz, son of Frank Gideon Schmeltz and Sarah Sevilla Klinger, on 18 November 1995.2 Lavina Walker died on 14 February 2007, Memorial Medical Center, Las Cruces, NM, at age 87.1

Lavina Schmeltz, 87, of Las Cruces, NM passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at Memorial Medical Center. Mrs. Schmeltz was born February 5, 1920 in Samslee, Missouri to William Clark Walker and Mary Florence Marshall Walker. She worked civil service prior to her retirement and was a member of VFW Auxillary #10124. She was quite the adventurer and traveler, enjoying big game hunting, dancing, listening to music and driving race cars. Her favorite poem was "Wonderlust" by Robert Service.
Mrs. Schmeltz was preceded in death by her first husband, Otis Smith, her daughter Mary Lynn Sheldon, and son Billy Smith. She is survived by her husband, Lee of the family home; her son, Johnnie Smith of Santa Fe, NM; step-children Bill Schmeltz, of Las Cruces; Alexander Schmeltz of Florida, Donna Marie Schmeltz and Ann Margaret Walker both of Maryland, and Patricia Ann Thomason of Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Schmeltz will lie in state from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 17 and from 1-8:00 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2007 at Graham's Mortuary, 555 West Amador, Las Cruces, NM 88005. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 19, 2007 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
