Miner Killed When Three Are Caught In Fall
One of three miners caught in a rush of timber and coal at Penag Coal Company, mid-way between Donaldson and Good Spring, was killed, a second sustained injuries and the third escaped uninjured. The accident occurred at 7 p. m. on Tuesday.
Irvin Huntzinger, 59, of Hegins, was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. J. P. Robinson of Tremont and Deputy Coroner Richard Minnig of Tremont released the body to the Miller Funeral Home, Valley View.
Pennsylvania Mine Inspector Walter Davis said death was due to suffocation resulting from the pressure of fine coal and timber when timber broke causing the rush which covered the workers. Huntzinger's body was not recovered until 9:45 p. m.
The miner injured is Charles Hatter, 45, of Gratz who suffered shoulder and back injuries. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in the Tremont Area Community Ambulance with Wayne Jones, Paul Seiger and Orville Neidlinger as the ambulance attendants. His condition is listed as guarded.
Hatter's brother, Henry, 52, of Klingerstown, escaped serious injury. He was treated at the scene by Dr. p. P. Robinson of Tremont and sent to his home.
Another workman in the area, Monroe Breidigan of Pine Grove R. D. 1 escaped the fall.
The men were working on the east gangway of the third level of the No. 2 slope in what is known as the No.8 chute.
The operation is affiliated with the Lark interests.
