    William E. Carl, Jr., 85, of Valley View, was called by his King and risen Savior to his eternal home on December 14, 2023, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
    Born on September 8, 1938, in Fountain, PA, Bill was the oldest child of William E. Carl, Sr. and Blanche Huntzinger Carl.
    Bill, a 1956 graduate of Tri-Valley High School, was a lefty pitcher and outfielder for his high school baseball team under the reigns of Coach Zeigler. He also played ball on the Hegins Town Team. After graduation, Bill worked briefly at Hegins Mining Company until 1959 when he enrolled at Williamsport Technical Institute where he earned a certificate in bookkeeping in January 1961. He returned to Hegins Mining Company where he served as bookkeeper until November 1961 when he was drafted by the US Army during the Vietnam War. Private Carl E-4 served in Ankara, Turkey, serving in Communications in June 1962. He returned home in September 1963 after his father became ill to run the business. He received his Honorable Discharge from the Army shortly thereafter.
    In the spring of 1964, he started coaching the Hegins Teeners with A. Donald Buffington. Under their direction, Hegins was the Western Division Teener Champs in 1966, 1969, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1976, and 1978. Hegins won the Schuylkill League Teener Title in 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1976. His greatest accomplishment was when the Schuylkill West All-Star team clinched the VFW State Championship in August 1970, the first team ever from Schuylkill County to achieve this distinction.
    Bill continued coaching the Hegins Teeners up until 1979. Although he stepped out of the coaches box, he remained an instrumental figure with the Hegins Teeners organization for nearly 20 years, serving as a Treasurer.
    Since his retirement from Hegins Mining Company in 2011, Bill spent most of his time watching sports or attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was the utmost devoted Philadelphia Phillies fan and also cheered on the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State Football teams, and enjoyed NASCAR racing.
    Within the community, Bill was very active as a lifelong member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Hegins, where he served as former Administrative Board President, Treasurer, Trustee, usher, food closet volunteer. He was actively involved with the Hegins Park Association serving as past park treasurer and performing general park maintenance. He was a former coach of the Valley View Red Sox Little League Baseball team. Bill was one of the original organizers of the Hegins Midget Football Team. He also served on the Tri-Valley School Board in the early 1980's. Bill was a lifetime member of the Hegins VFW Post 8237. In 2011, the Hegins Valley View Rotary Club awarded him Citizen of the Year for his civic contributions. In 2022, the Hegins Park Association named the Hegins Teener ball field The William Carl, Jr. Baseball field in recognition of his love for baseball and the community
    Bill is survived by his wife Patricia Miller of Hegins whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage and their three children - Debra Romberger, wife of Clark, of Valley View; Brian Carl, and wife Wendy of Red Lion, and Brad Carl, and wife Karen of Hegins, and 6 grandchildren, Kelly and Emily Romberger of Valley View, Garrett and Allison Carl of Red Lion, Brenden and wife Madison of Hegins, and Ryder Carl, Hegins and 2 great grandchildren, Kaden and Kenna. Siblings Sandra Stutzman, Elizabeth "Bette" Scheib, and Daniel Carl of Hegins. Brother in-laws Robert Miller of Oregon and David Miller and wife Lora of Woodbridge, VA. Several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church, Hegins, on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Benjamin Scholl and Rev.William Danis officiating.
    A viewing will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Wednesday at the church.
    Burial with Military Honors will in St. John's Cemetery, Hegins.
