  Dr. Jack R. Ridge, 75, of Hanover Township, Professor Emeritus of physics at Moravian College, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2007 in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem. He was born in Minersville, Pa., the son of the late Russell and Gladys (Rothermel) Ridge. He was adopted and raiseoby his maternal grandparents, Edwin and Margaret Rothermel. He married his high school sweetheart, Laura, who survives him. He graduated Sum-ma Cum Laude from Moravian College in 1953 with a triple major in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. He spent one year as a scientist in the photo products department at E.I. DuPont and then devoted his career to higher education. He completed his master's degree in physics from Lehigh University in 1956. From 1954-56, he served as a graduate assistant at Lehigh and an instructor of mathematics and physics at Moravian College, while he and his wife, Laura, were also house parents at Moravian's Clewell Hall. He completed his Ph.D. in physics from Lehigh University in 1965. He chaired the Moravian College physics and earth science department, from 1959 until 1995. He was Moravian's Louise E. Juley professor of science, from 1993-95. Although he retired in 1996, Jack continued to have a presence on campus as professor emeritus, as well as serving on the board of trustees of Moravian College for four years. He was given The Moravian Alumni Association's Benigna Education Award in 2002. The award recognizes Moravian alumni for outstanding contributions to the field of education, including significant innovations to the teaching profession and dedication to the community at large. During his teaching career, Jack also received a National Science Foundation faculty fellowship, the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1967, and a National Science Foundation summer fellowship that allowed him to work at Homer Research Laboratories, Bethlehem Steel Corp., in 1976. In 1996, Jack was appointed professor emeritus of physics. Professionally, he was listed in the 1970 Edition Outstanding Educators of America and served as secretary, treasurer, vice president and President of the Central Pennsylvania Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. He served as chair of the Hanover Township Zoning Board of Adjustment for many years.
  Survivors: In addition to his wife, Laura, Jack is survived by their son, John and his wife, Mary, living in Medford, Mass; his daughter, Pamela and her husband, Howard Foltz, living in Hanover Township. He was immensely Droud of their five grandchil dren, Katherine and Benjamin Foltz, and Daniel, Christopher and Rose Ridge.
