John H. "Jack" Otto, 73, of 815 Chestnut St., Heglns, died Friday at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where he had been a patient since Tuesday.
Born in Heglns, Oct. 20, 1933, he was a son of the late Norman and Mildred Straub Otto.
A 1951 Heglns Township High School graduate, he served In the US Navy.
He had been a coal miner early in his life and later was a self-employed barber, having graduated from Harrisburg Barber School.
He owned and operated the John Otto Barber Shop at Chestnut Street, Hegins. He was also a barber instructor at the State Correctional Institution Frackville for 10 years.
He enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
He was a member of the Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hegins, where he served as an usher and greeter and participated in the fundraising dramas held at the church.
He was a member of Valley Lodge 797 F&AM, Valley View, Woodmen of the World Lodge, Camp 433, Pitman, Hegins Fire Company, American Legion, Valley View, and the Valley View VFW.
Surviving are his wife, N. Kathryn Schwartz Otto, whom he married Aug. 31, 1957, Hegins; a son, Peter, husband of Shawni Otto; a granddaughter, Carlee Otto, all of Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Janice, wife of Donald Scheib, Dunnellon, Fla., and Judy, wife of Charles Huntzinger, Hegins; and a brother, George, husband of Reeta Otto, New Cumberland.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, 510 E. Main St., Hegins, with the Rev. Warren Egebo officiating. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church. The Valley Lodge 797 F&AM will conduct a service Tuesday morning at the church. Interment will be in Friedens Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery, Hegins, with military services conducted by the Valley View American Legion and VFW.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to the Friedens Lutheran Church Elevator and Addition Debt Reduction Fund, P.O. Box 248, Hegins, PA 17938.
The Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, 1133 Ridge Road, Klingerstown, is in charge of arrangements.

George Henry Straub Jr., 84, of Laureldale and formerly of Valley View, passed away December 24, 2019, at Penn State Health - St. Joseph, with his entire family present. He was the loving husband of Dianne F. (Kreiser) Straub, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Born on June 12, 1935, in Ashland, he was a son of the late George H. Straub and Dorothy (Dieter) Straub. George was a 1953 graduate of Hegins Township High School. He was employed as a coal miner, a steel worker with Bethlehem Steel and retired after working 38 years at Reading Automatic Machine Corp. George then served eight years on Laureldale Borough Council. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. An avid hunter, he enjoyed time with his friends at the Havice Valley Camp. George is also survived by his son, Kevin L., husband of Lisa M. (Harding) Straub, of Muhlenberg Township; two grandsons, Matthew Jacob Straub and Christopher George Straub. Other survivors include his three siblings: Christina Straub, of Bedford, Va; Carol Weller, of Saint Marco Island, Fla; and David Straub, of Crawfton, Md. George was preceded in death by his eldest son, Matthew John Straub, who died on July 3, 1976. A graveside service will be held Monday, December 30, at 12:00 noon, at St. John’s Cemetery, 510 E Main Street, Hegins, PA 17938.
