  • He was the son of Victor Wesley Bowhay and Grace VanVerth.1
  • Ronald Eugene Bowhay died on 18 March 2011, Bellingham, Whatcom County, WA, at age 79.1
  • Newspaper obituary:
Surrounded by his loving family, Ron passed peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, 2011 in Bellingham, WA.
He was born in Axtell, Kansas on October 4, 1931, to Victor Wesley Bowhay and Grace Van Verth Bowhay. Their family moved to Whatcom County in 1938 where Ron worked on his family farm while attending school.
During his high school years at Mt. Baker, he was an "All County" football player before graduating in 1950.
He married the love of his life, Winona Louise Hammer, on August 5, 1950. He was a devoted husband and father who was an endless source of knowledge. They spent 60 years loving one another, and proudly raising their five sons. He set a great example for his sons of what it is to be a great man. He was also a gentle hero with unlimited patience who guided many down the path of life with his kindness, love, and abounding generosity.
His faith in Jesus Christ and trust in God's will was a pivotal part of every aspect of his life. He was a teacher to us all. Professionally, he worked long and hard, striving always to do his best in every occupation he held.
Early on he worked in a saw mill, eventually he became a miner and then a logger, but he spent the majority of his career commercial salmon fishing. He owned and operated several vessels out of Kodiak, AK, including the 'Popeye', 'Summit' and 'Ronnona B.'
Ron retired from fishing in 1982 and spent the rest of his life working his 40 acres in Bellingham, WA. While his life was filled with much joy and good fortune, he also battled an inordinate amount of medical complications, but always with a smile.
In 1962, at the age of 30, he was diagnosed with kidney disease and told he had about a year to live. Ron battled the disease with strong will, unwavering faith in god, and dialysis treatments that began in 1983. Through the selfless gift of a healthy kidney from his loving brother, Richard Bowhay, in 1986, Ron underwent a successful kidney transplant at the age of 54.
In 1988 he suffered a full cardiac arrest, and doctors once again gave him little chance of recovery, but within a month he was out of the hospital. He underwent countless procedures and battled numerous ailments during the rest of his life, but throughout his medical trials many wonderful individuals cared for him.
The family would specifically like to thank Dr. Lombard, Dr. Lindenbaum, Dr. Lombardi, Dr. Douglas, Dr. Seltzer, Dr. Doherty, Dr. Locci, Dr. Johnson, Dr. Rubin, Pierce Zemler, PA, and the staff at PCU and in Oncology at St. Joseph's Hospital.
While defying the medical odds during retirement, he continued living life to the fullest. He was an accomplished hunter (including a dream hunt on an African Safari), a fisherman, a golfer, a card player, and a bowler. He helped run an antique business with wife, Noni, son, Tom and daughter-in-law, Janet. "Snow birding" in Desert Hot Springs, CA, trips with family to Hawaii, traveling the country looking for treasures, and a 40th anniversary trip to Europe were just some of his many adventures.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Grace; his brother, Gerald; and recently by his son, Tom, who passed away on March 28, 2011 after a battle with ALS.
Awaiting us in heaven, Ron is survived by his wife, Winona; sons: Ken, Dan, Dave and Steve; daughters-in-law, Janet, Sherry, Cindy and Heather; brothers: Laverne and Richard; sisters: Willa Elledge, Shirley Wilburn and Jean Leavitt; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews and friends.
Please join the family and share memories at Immanuel Bible Church on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. 2000 West North St. Bellingham, WA 98225.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ron's honor to the ALS Association - Evergreen Chapter or to the Northwest Kidney Center. Moles Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Bayview Chapel

Thomas Wayne Bowhay1

  • He was the son of Ronald Eugene Bowhay and Winona Louise Hammer.1
  • Thomas Wayne Bowhay died on 28 March 2011, Woodinville, King County, WA, at age 55.1
  • Newspaper obituary:
Thomas Wayne Bowhay, age 55, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 28th, 2011 at his home in Woodinville, Washington after being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in June of 2009, and the courageous battle that followed.
He was born the middle of five sons to Ronald and Winona Bowhay on December 10, 1955, in Bellingham, Washington. Tom and his brothers enjoyed an adventurous childhood, quickly learning the value of hard work and an appreciation for the outdoors while roaming the family's 40-acre property, working aboard their father's commercial fishing boat in Alaska over the summer, and logging North Cascade forests in the fall.
Throughout his life he remained an avid outdoorsman, camping, hunting and fishing with family and friends. Tom attended Mount Baker High School, graduating in 1974. He played defensive end in football, competed in the pole vault and courted the love of his life, Janet Elaine Hoffman.
In 1976, the two high school sweethearts were married in Bellingham, Washington and spent the next 35 years by each other's side.
Tom was a perpetual entrepreneur, a tireless worker, an exceptional leader, a dedicated husband and father, a loyal friend, a doting uncle, and a loving son and brother who engaged the world in a constant state of amazement and wonder. He accomplished a great deal in his life but always seemed to derive more happiness and satisfaction sharing his good fortune with those around him. If Tom was enjoying something, chances were that those he loved were enjoying it with him. Tom's desire to see those around him happy inspired him to give a great deal of his heart to ensure it.
He and Janet have always enjoyed a full house and frequently opened their doors to friends and family members needing a place to stay while attending college, starting a new job or just trying to figure out their next move in life.
Tom began his own painting company before graduating from high school. At the age of 19, with years of experience fishing with his father and brothers, he moved to Alaska to captain a commercial fishing vessel. Not long after he became part owner of his own boat, "The Moondance", which Tom captained through several profitable, yet dangerous king crab, herring and salmon seasons in Kodiak, Alaska.
After the birth of his two sons, Tom realized that it was time to find a safer career that was closer to home. Not long after a short term position at a Seattle-based seafood brokerage, Tom along with his eldest brother and a good friend, started their own seafood company, Odyssey Enterprises, in Ballard, Washington. True to its name, Odyssey took him to nearly every continent on the globe in search of opportunity. The company's long journey began as one man on the floor of an empty office, and continues as a respected company of 200 + employees.
Tom was forced into early retirement in 1997 due to a crippling spinal cord injury suffered while skiing with his sons in 1996. His injury left him bedridden for more than a year, caused him constant pain, and required that he use a scooter for the majority of his remaining years. Despite this, Tom remained upbeat and continued to live life with a zeal that many without such a predicament would admire.
Tom always had a knack for juggling several endeavors at a time and these projects helped him stay busy after retirement. He became an astute follower of the stock market, invested in real estate, continued to see the world, including an African Safari and began new hobbies, including wood carving, wine collecting, as well as furniture and porcelain repair. He also became a partner in an antique business with his wife and parents. The four of them travelled all across the country searching for hidden treasures at swapmeets and estate sales while enjoying each-others company.
By sheer will and dedication to his rehabilitation, Tom was able to overcome his disability after many years, though he was never again able to walk without some discomfort. Through it all, Tom never complained and made the most of every moment.
Tom is preceded in death by his grandparents, Victor and Grace Bowhay, Raymond and Orma Hammer, his father and mother in-law, Everett and Mary Jane Hoffman, and his nephew, James Sanderson. He is no doubt happy to see them again.
Tom is survived by his wife, Janet; his sons: Adam (Alliso), and Justin (fiancée, Amy Horsman); his granddaughter, Sofia; parents, Ronald and Winona Bowhay; brothers: Ken, Dan (Heather), David (Sherry) and Steve (Cindy); brothers-in-law: Robert Hoffman and Ray (Patricia) Hoffman; sisters-in-law: Linda (Jack) Headlee, Carol (Jerry) Sanderson and Margaret Bruner; nieces and nephews: Jennifer Ahnee, Spencer Bowhay, Jacob Headlee, Amy Bowhay, Alyssa Bowhay, Lindsey Hoffman, Nick Hoffman, Kinsey Moses, Bristol and Brielle Hoffman, Alex Bruner, Hilleary Bruner, Brandon Bowhay, Christopher Bowhay, Nicholas Bowhay, Sean Smith, Zack Bowhay, Melissa Bowhay, Dawson Bowhay, Laci Bowhay and Wesley Bowhay; as well as countless friends and others whose lives he touched.
A service celebrating Tom's life will be held Sunday, April 3rd at 3:00 pm at Moles Family Funeral Home Bayview Chapel in Bellingham, Washington.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Evergreen Chapter of the ALS Foundation
