  • Melvin C. Klinger died on 23 May 1935, Coal Township, Northumberland County, PA, at age 22; By suicide.1
  • Newspaper obituary:
CITY YOUTH ENDS LIFE BY SLASHING HIS THROAT
Body of Melvin C. Klinger Is Found By Poss[[e] in Woods Near Odd Fellows' Cemetery.
YOUTH HAD BEEN IN POOR HEALTH
Melvin C. Klinger, 23, son of Charles Klinger, of 41 North Diamond street, ended his life yester day by slashing his throat. The life less body of the young man was found In the woods near the Odd Fellows' cemetery last evening at 7:30, after police and a posse of Tharptown residents had searched the countryside for several hours.
Klinger, an ex-soldier who had served an enlistment in the Panama Canal Zone, had been in poor health for some time, and worried about his physical condition. Recently he had undergone an operation at the Shamokin hospital for appendicitis.
The young man was last seen alive by his grandmother, Mrs. John Fegley, Tharptown, with whom he made his home. At 9:30 yesterday morning he waved to her and started to walk southward from the village. When he did not return during the day she became alarmed and told neighbors she feared he had come to some harm.
A posse composed of flity men searched for some time before William Fuller, of Tharptown, came upon the body of the young man. State troopers and County Detective Donald Zimmerman, who were also engaged in the hunt for Klinger, were summoned. The officers said following an Investigation there' was no doubt the ex-soldier had taken his own life.
Police said after examining the body that after slashing his throat Klinger had obviously tried to save himself. His shirt was wrapped around his throat, evidently In a last desperate attempt to staunch the flow of blood. Neither knife nor razor blade was found near the body, but police said it may be buried under the leaves which cover the ground thickly where the body was found.
In reconstructing the suicide, state police said Klinger had been wearing a zipper jacket over his shirt when he left home. He removed the shirt and jacket, but put the jacket on again. After slashing himself he is believed to have changed his mind about dying and sought to save him self by wrapping the shirt around his neck.
Melvin C. Klinger was born in this city March 7, 1912. He was well known in this section, having atended the borough schools. Later he went to live with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Fegley, Tharptown. He was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle corps.
Surviving are the parents and grandparents, a brother, Lester, and a sister, Mrs. John Martinchick. Two step-sisters, Martha and Charlotte Van Mater, and a step-brother, John Van Mater, also survive.
Burial services will be held in the i Shamokin funeral parlors Monday afternoon at 2:00. The burial sermon will be preached by the Rev. H. W. Butts, pastor of St. John's Evangelical church, Tharptown. The deceased will be accorded military honors by members of the American Legion post here. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.
