Samuel Klinger was born on 22 August 1824, Philip Klinger Homestead, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.1 He was the son of Alexander Klinger and Elizabeth Schwalm. Samuel Klinger was baptized on 19 September 1824, Zion (Klinger's) Church, Erdman, Dauphin County, PA.2,3 Some sources record that Samuel Klinger was born in 1827.4 He married Balinda Savidge, daughter of Valentine Savidge and Mary Reed, in 1848.5 In the 1850 US Census for Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Samuel and "Balinda" are listed with two children, "Addaline" (age 1) and "'Olaver" (age 6 months.)6 Samuel Klinger married Catharine Kissinger, daughter of John Kissinger and Elizabeth Hawk, in 1857.7,8 At the time of the 1860 Census, Samuel and Catharine were living in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County. Their household included 4 children: Adeline, Frank, Jefferson, and Emma.9 Samuel likely served in the Civil War for 9 months as a private in Company K of the 173rd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry, from November 2, 1863 to August 18, 1863. His service began and ended at Camp Curtin, in Harrisburg. There were at least 3 Samuel Klingers who all served around the same time in 3 different regiments, and from the available records it is difficult to distinguish them. Samuel's tombstone makes reference to the 173rd Regiment, Company K, which is consistent with these records for one of the Samuel Klingers.10,11,5 Samuel was apparently unmarried at the time of the 1870 Census. His household in Wiconisco Township, where he worked in a mine, included 3 sons, Jefferson, Alexander, and Alfred.12 Samuel Klinger married Rebecca Cooper, daughter of Adam Cooper and Elizabeth Lebo, after 1870.13,12 In 1880, Samuel was a coal miner in Wiconisco, Dauphin County. He and Rebecca were living with 3 children: Alfred, Thomas, and Carrie.14 Samuel Klinger died on 14 April 1891, at age 66.1 He was buried at Calvary United Methodist Cemetery, Wiconisco, Dauphin County, PA.5 In 1900, Samuel's widow Rebecca was living in Wiconisco with 2 of her children, Clinton and Carrie.15
