Johannes Wiest is also referred to as John, Oley John, and Der Ault Hannes in some sources.1 He was born on 13 February 1794, Oley, Berks County, PA.2 He married Catharine Merkel, daughter of Christian Merkel and Catharine Boyer, circa 1813.1 According to the Wiest Family History, Johannes was the ancestor of the Klingerstown branch of the family, his family having migrated fgrom Berks County to the Mahantango region when Johannes was only 9 years old. After hiis father died, Johannes, age 17, effectively became the head of the household, helping hiis mother raise his nrothers and sisters.
He continued and expanded his family's mercantile business and eventually came to possess most of the property, apart from some farms owned by the Baum family, that once comprised the Spread Eagle Manor aroound Klingerstown.1 Johannes Wiest died on 10 October 1881, Klingerstown, Schuylkill County, PA, at age 87.3 He was buried at Zion (Klinger's) Church Cemetery, Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, PA.4
