Newspaper obituary:
Harlan L. Schreffler, 100, Rebuck
REBUCK — For 100 years, 6 months, and 4 days, his cherished presence touched the lives of his family and friends. On Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, the Good Lord saw it was time for the pain and suffering to end, and Harlan L. “Pap” Schreffler ascended to the heavens and left this earthly realm.
Born in Leck Kill on June 25, 1911, he was the son of the late Charles and Neila (Paul) Schreffler. His mother passed away from influenza prior to Christmas 1918. Pap always said this was a very difficult loss in his life. Several years later, he resided with his aunt, Ellen Hornberger. On New Year’s Day, 1934, he married the late Hilda (Rothermel) Schreffler. Following the death of his wife in 1979, he continued to live independently on his Rebuck farm until the winter of 2008.
He attended the former Pine Park School in Leck Kill. He was of Lutheran faith, and was a member of Himmel’s Church, Rebuck. Although farming was his favorite vocation, he held many other jobs throughout his younger years. He helped wire the first electrical utility lines that came through the lower Northumberland County area. He also worked for the state highway system, hand digging ditches and laying the stone, which became the groundwork for the first macadam roads in the Red Cross area.
He and his wife Hilda operated a 94 acre dairy farm in Rebuck. Besides raising chickens and hogs, they grew vegetables and flowers in their truck patch, selling a variety of produce and eggs to customers on his market route. Market days were some of his favorite times, as it gave him time to “schwetz” with his customers.
As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and trapping. He was an avid reader until his eyesight failed him and he always enjoyed visits from his friends and family.
He is survived by two daughters, Shirley Crossley, wife of the late Carl Crossley, of Bloomsburg, and Leah Unger, wife of Rodney Unger, of Leck Kill; five grandchildren and their spouses, Elwood and Lori Crossley, of Grand Junction, Colo., Darby (Unger) and Thomas McDonnell, of Bloomsburg, Eugene Crossley, of Bloomsburg, Elaine (Crossley) and Merrill Dickinson, of Albany, Ga., and Charles and Diane Unger, of Overlook; great-grandchildren, Brock and Jill Crossley, of Casper, Wyo., Lindsey and Matthew Dickinson, of Albany, Ga., Adam and Amanda Unger, of Overlook; stepgreat-grandchildren, Danny Walsh and Kassie Smith, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Melissa Smith, of Casper, Wyo; and one great-great-grandson, Calyn Crossley, Casper.
Besides his parents, wife and Aunt Ellie, he was predeceased by two sisters and their spouses, Mildred and Lyle Schreffler and Lula and Lee Reiner; one half brother, Ray Schreffler; a beloved maternal aunt, Laura Long; and a son-in-law, Carl Crossley.
A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, 1133 Ridge Road, Klingerstown, followed by a service to celebrate Pap’s life at 11 with the Rev. Daniel Durkee, senior pastor of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, Gratz, officiating.
Interment will follow in Himmel’s Cemetery, Rebuck.
The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions be made to the Upper Dauphin Human Services Center, P.O. Box 157, Elizabethville, PA 17023.
